For a long time the Korean scientific community resisted working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. The silence is no longer a viable option.
The STR has been battling to eliminate content from textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environments which can result in changes in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes can, over generations result in the development of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. As time passes, this difference in reproduction can result in the creation of entirely new species.
The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept has had a variety of meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.
Recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. The variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it drives most evolutionary change. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed down to the next generation.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies Creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans as well as Archaeopteryx - a feathered dino that is believed to be the ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution Important?

It is important for scientists to stand up for the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks that cover the evolutionary history of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is important to remember that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. This belief is based on various reasons. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as the development of new medicines, while others do so to improve the quality of animal and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and still others have a deep religious belief in God and are seeking to understand how the universe functions.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and all that is in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. While not all creationists are Christian however, they are a majority. Creationists typically fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most common type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently.
OECs aren't as popular however their beliefs are as passionate like those of YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a myth.
Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it would require the creation of a miracle, and the pioneers of modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their position "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." In this belief system, God creates the original species and then allows them to change over time. Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. They believe that all species were created at the same time and then slowly evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life cannot arise from nonliving matter.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. This is a position that is backed by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has achieved its first victory in eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The next goal is to take out the finch-research of Darwin's famed and also on human evolution.
STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. The goal, according to STR is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays a negative view for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.
The KACR has achieved many things in the past through seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. One of them was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.
On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
